My interest in Ginans has been since childhood and when attending Bait-ul-Ilm classes. My mother was our mentor for both my sister Nargis Balolia and myself in teaching the Raags and meanings of Ginans. My interest in reciting the Ginans came after coming to Canada in the early 70s. My enthusiasm for reciting Ginans came when both my sister and I were given opportunities to recite Ginans jointly in Jamatkhanas in Toronto which required practice of ragas and coordination. Eventually we both had to learn to recite the Ginans individually. I enjoyed the ability to recite them during morning Jamathana as it would require reciting Ginans for four different ceremonies which made it a good challenge of style and timing. My sister went on to learn the Ginans with Music and has several recordings. I have kept track of every Ginan I have recited at any occasion and can tell which have been the most favorite of mine or served the occasion such as Pre-Bandagi, Post-Bandagi, Pre-Dua, Middle-Ginan, Talika-Ginan, Abe-Shafa, Giriazari, occasion of funerals and happiness. Learning new Ginans now is a challenge and this is what we all strive for as is the enthusiasm to teach the next generation.
