Alwaez Dr. Hassanali Walji was born in Manyoni, Tanzania, in 1929, and passed away in 1978, at the young age of 49 years. He began his career in Mbeya, Tanzania, where he was a teacher in the Mbeya Public School system. He then studied Physiotherapy and Chiropody (Podiatry) and established a practice in Mbeya. At an early stage in his life he developed a keen interest in Islamic Studies and taught himself about our religion and Islam through extensive reading and self-studying. Became an honorary Alwaez and preached regularly until his demise in 1978. He also had an amazing voice and used to love to sing Ginans – he recited Ginans in Hazir Imam’s Holy Presence several times. Moved to Nairobi, Kenya in 1962/63 where he re-established his private practice as a Physiotherapist and Chiropodist. Dr. Walji was Chairman of the Aga Khan Ismailia Association, Kenya. Continued preaching and singing Ginans in Jamat Khanas in Kenya as well as internationally and became extremely famous for it – everyone in the community, all over the world, knew who Dr. Walji was! They all said he was their 'personal' friend.
