I was interested in music from a very young age. We emigrated to Canada in 1972. My cousin and her husband started first jamatkhana in the basement of the building where we were residing. There were probably about 50 jamati members at that time in the downtown Vancouver area. I was asked to recite ginans and my interest grew from thereon. In 1993, Mrs. Dolat Samji started teaching ginans to adults in North Vancouver Jamatkhana. Later she asked me to take over the classes. I did not know many ginans at the time and started attending classes at Darkhana where Gulbanubai Remtulla was teaching. I started attending her classes on Mondays, and taught ginans to my class on Wednesdays. Alwaez Abu Aly, Alwaez Amlani and Alwaez Sultan Mohamed taught us the meanings of the ginans. In 1982, I was very fortunate to recite in the huzur purnoor of Mowlana Hazir Imam in Vancouver and also participated in intezar and devotional programs. I continue to learn ginans. I stopped teaching adult classes in 2006 but still continue to train students and youths who are asked to recite ginans during festivals in Jamatkhana.
