I was always inspired by my brother the legend, Alidina Jamal Jivraj. All my brothers and sisters sang ginans however, as I married at the age of 16 and raised 5 children, I was not able to. Before migrating to Paris in 1972, I went to Madgascar where the Mukhi requested me to sing ginans as the Jamat was very small. This was my turning point. I came to Paris and that is where I got a lot of opportunity to sing ginans as the Jamat was small. Many missionaries visited Paris and we had open house for them. I spent quality time with them to teach me meaning and raags of the ginans. I had the opportunity of singing in the presence of Hazer Imam during Silver Jubilee Padhramni. I migrated to Canada in 1987 and have not stopped and still continue to sing ginans in Khane or Ginan Mahefils. When I sing ginans I make sure to know the meanings otherwise I would not be doing justice. Ginans are praise of Allah, Prophets, Imams and they also convey religious teachings which brings me joy. We never know when one teaching could change a person's life by listening to ginans.Birthplace: Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania
