Al-Waez Alijah Abdul Aziz (Sairāb Abū Turābī) was born in Rajkot, Gujarat, India to Rai Abdulla Hirji Rajkotwala and Rai Banu Rehmat Bai. Amar Ma, his grandmother and first teacher, played a pivotal role in his religious formation. She taught him ginan and the marthīyā, parbhātiyā, and gīt, all of which she knew by heart. Renowned missionaries were regular guests at their Rajkot home including Missionary Pir Sabzali, Missionary Varteji, Chief Missionary Hussaini Pir Muhamed, and Missionary Hamir Lakha. Alijah Saheb was naturally drawn to the study of the ginan and other religious literature. He trained as an al-Waez with Missionary Damji Velji and began delivering the waez at a young age. His teachers include the missionaries Varteji, Ali Mohammed Daya, Ali Bhai Nanji, and Hamir Lakha. Alijah Saheb served as an Honorary Missionary and ginan teacher in Rajkot, Dhaka, Shikarpur, Khaybar, and Karachi. He is remembered as a beloved teacher in the Kharadar, Ranchorline, and Garden Jamatkhanas and was regarded as a walking encyclopedia of the ginan. Among his most famous books are Pyārā Imām nī Pyārī Vātō and Jampudīp Nā Sultān, and his most popular gīt are Dādā nā Dēś Māṅ and Mērā Sāb Sōṇāṅ Āyā.
