I have been reciting Ginans since I was 4 years of age. I loved listening to songs but never sang any; my interest was always in Ginan recitation. My mom had a beautiful voice and was my mentor in my teen years. My paternal grandmother was another great mentor. She would take me to Jamat Khana in Tanga, Tanzania, everyday very early so I could practice reciting Ginans before the Jamat showed up. Some of my highlights that I was blessed with were participation and winning Ginan competition in 1982; recited Ginan during the opening of Belle Rive Jamat Khana in Edmonton in 1997. I have yet to learn a lot of Ginans and have never stopped learning. When I get up on the podium to recite, I just feel a wave of blessings over me. I get the strength and feel so blessed to be able to recite Ginans. I hope and pray I am able to teach my grandchildren to recite Ginans - that will be my legacy. May I have the strength to continue to recite for many years to come and to share my knowledge with my grandchildren.
