I grew up in Mombasa where I did my schooling and got married and moved to Nairobi. I am now living in Edmonton, Alberta since 1991 with my family. My mum used to sing ginans and movie songs when I was little and this really got me interested since she had a very melodious voice. Initially she would teach me and I learnt to sing by-heart! Later on in school we used to have classes and I participated very actively and got lots of waraas in jamat khana. In the 1970s/80s, we used to sing the whole ginan so this meant singing for at least 10 minutes sometimes! We did not have ginan tapes so most of the ginans were taught in Aga Khan schools in Religion lesson by the religion teachers. Or we learnt from friends or their mothers. I also participated in competitions. Due to my love for singing ginans, I encouraged my 2 boys, Rameez and Zafeer too, from a very early age. In fact, I sang ginans when putting them to sleep! This way they sang in jamat khana at a very young age when they didn't know how to read. I was so fortunate to be given the opportunity to participate in Intezar during Diamond Jubilee deedar in Calgary. I am so humbled to have a CD of ginans that I made with my son Rameez Karim with the help from Arzina Merali, who encouraged us! I hope that I can inspire others to sing and hope that my CD can be of help to others. Thank you for this opportunity!
