We learnt ginans in elementary school religious classes. My first favourite ginan was Unchthi Ayo. Later, whilst attending my first Deedar, I heard someone recite Sahebji Tun More Man Bhave. I was so touched by the delivery that I got pulled in to learn many ginans. My mentors were my dad, my paternal uncles, Mr. Abdallah Rajabali of Dar es Salaam, and most significantly, Rai Shamshu Bandali Haji. My first ever recordings were encouraged by Salim Mawani who has since moved from Edm. Later in life, more than half my recordings have been encouraged by Mrs Arzina Merali, who has definitely been my biggest motivator. Above all, I humbly believe that I have been blessed to be able to learn so many ginans and be given opportunities to recite. I am just an instrument and feel inside me, the voice comes from somewhere else. Shukran lillah.
