Al-waez Rai Shamsudin Bandali Haji was born in 1912 and was given the name 'Shamsuddin' by Mawlana Sultan Mohamed Shah (Aga Khan III). Having lost his mother soon after his birth, he was raised by his aunt, Mukhiani Khatija Jaffer Haji in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania (then Tanganyika). Out of his love for the Ginans, Al-waez Rai Shamsudin Bandali Haji undertook the monumental task of preserving the ginans by recording them in his voice on audio cassettes. He recorded over 600 ginans and granths, which were later digitized for wider community access and use. He was married to Kulsum Kanji Nanji and they had two children Maherunissa and Shiraz. The family moved to Canada in 1973 where Al-waez Rai Shamsudin Bandali Haji passed away in 1996.
