I was born in Tanzania and eventually settled in Kampala, Uganda. I began my career as an English teacher and later became Principal of AgaKhan High School, Kololo, until October 1972, when the forced Asian exodus of that year brought me and my family to Vancouver Canada. I have been a former Corporate banker in Vancouver and a retired business executive. My love for music was nurtured by my parents who were both good singers. My interest in Ginans was influenced by renowned singers in Tanzania such as Alidina Jamal Jivraj, Shamshu Tejpar and including my uncle Pyarali Cassum Virjee, with whom I spent many of my school holidays. My knowledge in Ginans was quite limited until I got married to my wife Zubeda, (who apart from having a beautiful voice) served as my source of inspiration with her breadth of knowledge and guidance. The opportunities I get to sing Ginans at JKs has further developed my ability to interpret the ginanic tradition as best as I can and it gives me great joy.
