Alijahbanu Daulatkhanu was passionately fond of Indian music, especially Classical music. She had a beautiful voice and music was always to be heard in our home when we were growing up. She was called on to recite ginans in Jamatkana very often and I also learned to recite ginans from her. She was involved in performing and organizing Indian music parties in Mwanza. Musicians who visited Mwanza always had a place to stay in our home. In 1957 while in Dar-es-Salaam, she took lessons in Indian classical music from two wonderful musicians, Jathubjai and Govribhai. On her return to Mwanza, she taught my father all that she had learned. Her interest in ginans continued unabated and were recorded on an Akai reel to reel tape recorder. Subsequently she transferred these ginans to cassette tapes. She recorded additional ginans in Vancouver producing CDs and MP3s. The older recorded ginans were cleaned up professionally. These ginans were played in many Jamatkhanas around the world. Finally, Ginan Central, University of Saskatchewan became a central repository of these ginans and are a valuable asset for many people wishing to learn ginans in their original tunes.
