Alijah Akbarali was passionately fond of Indian music, especially Classical music. He had a beautiful voice and music was always to be heard in our home when we were growing up. He was called on to recite ginans in our Jamatkana very often and I also learned to recite ginans from him. He was involved in performing as well as organizing Indian music parties in Mwanza. Musicians who visited Mwanza were always welcome to stay in our home. We were used to music all day starting with morning Ragas at 6 am, going on through the day even when our parents were not present at home. His interest in ginans continued unabated and recorded ginans on an Akai reel to reel tape recorder. The older recorded ginans were cleaned up professionally by a recording studio in Vancouver. These ginans on the cassettes and CDs were played in many Jamatkhanas around the world. Finally, Ginan Central, University of Saskatchewan became a central repository of these ginans and are a valuable asset for many people wishing to learn ginans in their original tunes. I myself have used this resource to learn ginans and recite them at Lions Gate North Vancouver, and at other Jamatkhanas.
