I was around 12 years old when my older uncle encouraged me to learn ginans. The village where I lived in India, did not have a ginan teacher but I was passionate and memorized 25 commonly recited ginans. When I was 19 years old, I moved to Karachi where my love for ginans grew and I was able to learn an additional 35 ginans. However, because I owned my own business, I was not able to go to Jamatkhana regularly and my progress in learning more ginans stalled. In 1995, I moved to Chicago where I got ample opportunities to learn ginans and where jamati members encouraged me to record my ginans. In 2005, I moved to Toronto and now attend Unionville Jamatkhana. In total I have a repertoire of 140 ginans which I recite regularly during morning and evening prayers. I can now recite many ginans which are not commonly recited and which are appreciated by the jamat due to their uniqueness. The Imam emphasises the importance of ginans and in my eyes they are the key to a hidden treasure which the pirs have given us.
